Amazing lecture. I've always been intrigued by the many medieval cities that had buildings on their bridges. Because they seemed to be around for a long time but then many they just disappeared, I figured it was due to fires. I think, is it Belgium or Austria? that still has some old preserved fortress cities that have intact building on their old bridge? I think its Venice that still has some stone structure buildings on bridges also.

Nice idea but look at the mess the new Streatham Wells LTN has caused this week. It took friends three hours to get from Clapham to Norbury on public transport & they had to walk from Streatham because their second bus terminated their journey because the driver’s shift had ended due to the traffic delays.

"Closure of all the businesses"? What are you talking about? Have a look at the businesses in the video. Do they look like they're closed to you? They look very much open to me. And there are lots of potential customers milling around, who don't have to worry about car parking, and probably have more money in their pockets because they're spending less on petrol. Looks like a great situation for those businesses in the video, tbh. I'm retired now, but if I was younger, and owned a shop, I'd want it to be in a LTN, with plenty of walkers and cyclists able to stop, look at my shop, and then walk in and buy stuff. Some stores in New York have seen their takings increase by 500% once the street replaced the parking bays with cycle paths.

Government policy is to reduce the use of motorised transport. The only way you are going to do that is to encourage active transport (walking and cycling) whilst discouraging motorised transport. Once the amount of motorised transport has decreased, because drivers realise they can complete their journeys more quickly by cycling or walking or using public transport, pollution levels will drop. The LTN's simply weren't in place for long enough to show this benefit. It needs at least a couple of years for drivers to decide to stop using their cars.

@South Wirral Cyclist. Government policy is have everyone pay for public transport. That's why they are making life hell for private vehicle users. The masses will not walk or cycle in to work especially if they work in a posh building in the city. What if you are a single mum and have three small kids and want to go do the weekly shop? Bung it all on a bike? This whole thing was a scam to begin with. It was always just an excuse to say it was to help cyclists and residents. @@user-ic7mv6bj4w Government wants to reduce motorised transport and commuters moving from private cars to public transport achieves that. There are 2 approaches. Raising the cost of running/decreasing the convenience of a private car or reducing the cost of public transport. I guess the government is gradually reducing the convenience of private car usage in cities (congestion and parking chargees, reduced speed limits, bus and cycle lanes, LTN's). When labour ran Sheffield council in the 1970's they made public transport free, which resulted in a big reduction in city centre traffic. @@user-ic7mv6bj4w They are the best months, as you feel more invigorated. Here in the Czechlands it often hits -30c which means more layers but totally beats breathing stale air in a car or bus.

The Growing traffic problems in England was one of the reasons I left in 1990 to start a new life with my family in Germany. We live near the Dutch border, and what is seen in this video has been the norm for me for 30 years now, and as a family, we love it. I'm happy that this is being tried out in English cities. There will be teething-problems, mostly from drivers, but what happens is that the streets become a vibrant and safe living-space day and night. We got rid of our car in 1995 and as a small family realised we didn't need it as most journeys were just a few miles. We bought a 'Bakfiets' (cargo bike) from Holland and the kids loved it. For holidays and visits to England we simply hired a car, and realised that was much cheaper than owning one. Nowadays, with the use of technology, you can download apps for pay-as-you-go cars if you need them. Add to that online orders and deliveries and you don't need your own transport. Many young people of driving age where we live aren't even interested to have a driving licence - they get around just fine on e-bikes/scooters, and an incredibly good and cheap public transport system. The future is traffic-free living spaces, whether you like it, or not.

Totally agree. Life here in the Czechlands for non car users is also much better than the UK although it wasn't the main reason for moving. I think it's like giving up smoking, this weird car fetish as the issue is purely the majority of drivers' aversion to local authorities daring to push them back to a fairer allocated space. The gutter press (90% of UK read press) doesn't help either.

You left a whole country because of traffic? You know you could have easily lived in quieter towns here in England right?

LTNs are creating extreme hate between residents and councils. LTNs are ignoring disabled people. Stupid LTNs are increasing the response time for emergency services. Stupid LTNs are creating traffic queues in the main roads. Stupid LTNs are creating more pollution by increasing driving distances. Stupid LTNs are dividing communities. Stupid LTNs making life more difficult. Remove these stupid barriers.

Emergency services have come out in favour of LTN's. Disabled people still have access & can still park outside their houses, &journeyto vehiclesbumping

Very popular in my LTN area, except for some drivers, but they only make up 34% of residents here , & even some of the are in favour now..
